Xerte and Xerte Online Toolkits is developed and maintained by a community of developers. They are wonderful people.

If you want to join them, subscribe to the xerte-dev mailing list at http://lists.nottingham.ac.uk/mailman/listinfo/xerte-dev. This mailing list is the place where all the issues are currently reported, and new features and developments are discussed. Joining the mailing list will give you a great idea of what's currently going on, and a flavour of the fantastic community supporting the software.

The project's source code is in two SVN repositories hosted on Google Code: the code for Xerte Online Toolkits is at http://code.google.com/p/xerteonlinetoolkits/.This codebase is in active development. Code for the older set of tools is found at http://code.google.com/p/xerte/.

To work with the SVN repositories you may wish to install and use TortoiseSVN http://tortoisesvn.net/ a wysiwyg client for working with SVN Repositories. This is very useful even if all you want to do is obtain the latest development code which you can do without officially becoming part of the developer community.

With the release of Xerte 2.17 and Xerte Online Toolkits (XOT) 1.81 and the evolving development of Xenith the html 5 player for XOT there are effectively 3 areas of development:

Xerte

Xerte is the name of the original developer tool which can be used to develop bespoke content, content developed by using the same easy to use page types used in XOT, or to develop additional page types for use with both Xerte and XOT. Xerte and XOT now share a common set of page types/models but page types developed with Xerte will only work with the Flash player based delivery until a corresponding model is also developed for html 5 delivery. (see below). So in short using Xerte the Windows only developer tool you can extend or develop additional page types/models or bespoke content for delivery via Flash player but for full compatibility an equivalent html 5 model should be part of any page type development.

XOT

Xerte Online Toolkits (XOT) is the online version of Xerte whereby anyone can author and share interactive learning objects. Those involved in the ongoing development of XOT might be extending existing page types or developing new page types for delivery via Flash, html 5 or both or by extending the site functionality by working with the PHP, MySQL, HTML & JavaScript code. To develop and test XOT code you will need a local or remote webserver and typically most developers use a localhost installation via XAMPP http://www.apachefriends.org/en/xampp.html

Xenith

Development of the Xenith code for HTML 5 playback of existing and new learning objects is ongoing. Much of this work is currently focussed on converting the existing Flash page types for delivery via HTML 5. Integration with XOT is already available via the SVN but at the moment the separate url for HTML 5 playback of LO's is not yet automated. To work with the Xenith code you will need to use a suitable script editor and the current developers use different tools including Notepad, Notepad++, Ultraedit, FlashDevelop and PHPStorm/WebStorm.
